Male or Female?
There are some popular misconceptions when it comes to both male and female cats and many truths some people tend to forget. We cant go into all of these as it would take many pages, so here are some brief comments.
Males are most likely not to spray when they are neutered from an early age. We neuter our kittens at around 3 months of age. Neutered males tend to be more affectionate more often and bond very well with their human companions and make good companion cats.
Females come 'on call' frequently and become very vocal, this no longer occurs after spaying. Females tend to be more aloof than their male counterparts but can be more affectionate than the males.
Most people assume it is better to have a female cat. We feel both male and female desexed cats are equally good in this breed. So ultimately the choice is yours.
What colors do Burmilla's come in?
Shaded or tipped with Black, Brown, Chocolate, Blue or Lilac (mostly Black or Brown) with a Silver White under coat.
What is their temperament like?
Burmilla's are very social, outgoing, affectionate, curious, gentle and playful cats at all ages, and enjoy the company of their adopted human carers without being too demanding.
What kind of maintenance is required?
Like most pets yearly vaccinations, flea and worming treatments are important. Weekly grooming with a mitt, brush or dishwashing gloves is also advised to strip any dead hair, but less frequently is fine.
Who owns Burmilla cats?
Burmilla's are owned by couples, families, young and old, in apartments as well as houses. Burmilla's are quite excepting of children and other pets, and adapt well to any loving, caring and warm environment.
Is the Burmilla a new breed?
Compared to most other breeds, Yes. The first Australian Burmilla litter was born in 1994 and received official national recognition in 1999.
One cat or two?
For a busy working couple it works well to have 2 cats, because the cats keep each other entertained while you are at work and spend almost all their time together, until you get home.
